#148: Confession Under Attack Down Under—Archbishop Julian Porteous (Free Version)

#148: Confession Under Attack Down Under—Archbishop Julian Porteous (Free Version)

Archbishop Julian Porteous is the Ordinary of Hobart, Tasmania, and an astute observer of Australian culture, particularly how fast it has veered toward militant secularism. The latest example is the law passed September, 2019, that provides jail time for priests who will not disclose what is confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (aka Penance, or Confession) by, say, an abuser of minors.

This is an outrageous and unprecedented intrusion into the running of the Catholic Church in what is otherwise known as a free country. The rights of the Church are violated, and the challenge becomes down to the great difficulty in explaining why the Seal of Confession is substantially different from a relationship like attorney-client privilege.

Think this could only happen in secularist Australia? Think again. Secularist America is next: California and Louisiana legislatures have already tried the same stunt.

In this episode you will learn

  • The context as to why this law amendment was passed, and why
  • Why the Catholic Church has been singled out for unjust scrutiny by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse compared to the MUCH more dangerous institutional environments for children
  • Why the Archbishop believes this attack on the rights of the Church and the sacred nature of the Seal of Confession provide a great opportunity for evangelization
  • Whether His Grace, or any priest in his archdiocese, is willing to go to jail rather than disclose what is said in Confession
  • Why this new Tasmanian law will actually work against its own stated rationale
  • What all this implies for Catholics in and outside Australia

Resources mentioned in this episode

  • Don’t Mess With Marriage pamphlet published and distributed across Australia by the Australian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and spearheaded by Archbishop Porteous
  • Background article on this new attack on religious freedom
  • Calvary movie, directed by John Michael McDonough (Rated R but exceptionally pro-Confession and pro-priest)
  • I Confess movie, directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Why Birth Control Is Evil: Part Two

Why Birth Control Is Evil: Part Two

My first video on why birth control is evil drew a LOT of very interesting comments, and several (common) misunderstandings. So I’m adding a second whack at the topic.

My perspective is one of a former dissenter (I used to think the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae was a well-intentioned crock).

A quick reminder of my policy on dealing with trolls. I block them. If you’re off topic, or you randomly bring in Pope Francis or President Trump or your hatred of the Catholic Church, you are most welcome to contribute to someone else’s com box. Thanks!

Also, I don’t engage with FNCs (fake name cowards). I block FNCs as well, but if the comment is neutral or funny or interesting, I’m very latitudinarian.

There are several disputes that arose after my video was uploaded last week.

I’m going to address three main disputes, one by one, here in Part Two:

1. The distinction between natural family planning (NFP) and contraception. Why does the Church condone the one and condemn the other? It’s word salad, a semantic game made up by wizened celibates in Rome to control the Catholic masses

2. Natural family planning involves periodic abstinence. And abstinence harms marriage! What is so hard to understand about this?

3. What about the population explosion? Why does the Church want to bring in billions of babies when it’s already tragically crowded in here?

Learn the benefits and blessings of natural family planning (NFP) which has a very impressive track record of marital happiness and longevity.

Oh, and the population bomb thing you’ve read about?

It IS a crock, and I prove it here.

#147: The Medjugorje Deception—Dr. E. Michael Jones

#147: The Medjugorje Deception—Dr. E. Michael Jones

In June 1981, six Croatian teens (well, one was 10) went up Podbrdo Hill near the village of Medjugorje in then rural Yugoslavia. When they came down, they said they had seen “the Gospa” (Croatian for Lady). The local bishop, Pavao Žanić, was initially open to their claims but…after he interviewed them, and learned the full story, he knew it was a complete hoax.

If you do an internet search for “Medjugorje” you will find that the pro-apparition websites, books, DVDs, and prayer groups, positively swamp any critical sources. Yet the official judgment of the Catholic Church is clear: Medjugorje is rejected (officially, non constat de supernaturalitate). And yet Church leadership all the way up to Pope Francis treats the decades-sprawling phenomenon with a combination of kid gloves playing hot potato, to mix a metaphor.

The six seers have parlayed their so-called apparitions into consistently high sources of income, and the pilgrimage industry still rakes in millions each year off of naive, usually low information Catholics seeking solace or answers at the place.

Dr. E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars magazine, wrote the first full length treatment of Medjugorje in 1988, and a book length account in 2010, which is why I invited him to give us an overview of the sprawling saga from the beginning. I do so with the intention of alerting my fellow Catholics who may be unaware (most are) of the truth about the Church’s discernment of this oddly toxic phenomenon.

In this episode you will learn

  • The strange contents of the first week interviews with the seers
  • The high percentage of spiritual directors of the seers’ and other Medjugorje promoters whose priesthoods were destroyed by sexual and occultic sins
  • How Medjugorje differs from approved apparitions
  • The danger of putting subjective emotions before objective teaching
  • Why the Medjugorje movement constantly tells half truths and outright lies
  • The historical framework of the conflict between the OFM Franciscans and the local bishops of Mostar-Duvno and why it explains a lot of what has happened since

Why Birth Control is Evil

Why Birth Control is Evil

Is there a more misunderstood, more controversial teaching of the Catholic Church than on contraception?

Most famously re-articulated on July 25, 1968 in the Encyclical Humanae Vitae by St. Paul VI, its message is a near perfect litmus test for Catholic orthodoxy in other areas.

In this video, I summarize the basic reasons why “birth control” (really birth prevention) is wrong. Starting with an appeal to natural law, and then moving to a sample of the anti-contraception biblical account.

#146: What the Bleep Happened to the Church?—John Gravino

#146: What the Bleep Happened to the Church?—John Gravino

Many people, especially Catholics, are vexed and confused about how the once admirable Catholic Church suddenly became identified with pedophilia, leadership corruption, duplicity, and worldly ideals having little to do with the gospel.

Author John Gravino has outlined two forces—one intellectual, one moral—working in tandem (although not always intentionally as allies) to create the present crisis. So the John Jay Report found that 81% of sexual abuse victims were teen boys (not “children”). But which moral theologians taught these predators in Roman collars? Who were the highly esteemed dissenters that shaped priestly formation?

And what about humanistic psychology? Ever hear of Carl Rogers and William Coulson—or Richard McCormick, SJ, or Andre Guindon, or Charles Curran? If the answer is no, this interview with the author of Confronting the Pope of Suspicion: The Key to Church Reform is the place to start understanding how the bleep we got here as a Church that claims to have been founded and sustained by Jesus Christ.

In this episode you will learn

  • The names and basic career paths of the main influencers in the 1960s and 70s (in secularist psychology and moral theology) that softened the ground for the sexual abuse crisis
  • That the real source of confusion is not the on-the-books doctrines but how they have been seriously undermined and subverted for two generations
  • Precisely how the controversial Amoris Laetitia by Pope Francis enshrines dissent and ambiguity into a papal document
  • Why the abolition of exceptionless moral norms represents the collapse of Catholic morals
  • How the Ten Commandments and traditional teachings of the Church were reinterpreted and recast as “important” but relegated to a place lower than conscience
  • How the prophecy in Malachi 2:7-9 about what happens when priests no longer follow God’s counsel

Eight Reasons to Be Thankful

Eight Reasons to Be Thankful

In this video, I highlight eight reasons to be thankful despite the horrors, confusions, fears, and shadows that surround us in the Church and in the world.

Most of is us consume WAY too much bad news, fake news, and scare news…this has an awful effect on our attitudes, and robs us of our peace.

So here are the EIGHT reasons to be thankful:

1. God loved us into existence.

2. God died on the Cross for us.

3. The Theological Virtue of Faith.

4. The Sacraments (starting with Baptism)

5. Our Lord gave us his Blessed Mother

6. The Catholic Church

7. Witness of the saints

8. God wills us to continue to be

This is a partial list, remember.

#145: Books You Must Read Before You Die—Joseph Pearce

If Joseph Pearce had a superhero alter ego, it would be…Bookman! I know of very few other scholars more qualified to recommend the great books we all ought to read before we go to The Great Printer. The British born writer, editor, and professor of literature has spent his life mining the gold from the raw ore of books out there. How great to have a guide who can tell gold apart from fool’s gold.

This exchange was a lot of fun, and I know you’ll learn as much as I did.

In this episode you will learn

  • The true meaning of a “classic” book
  • Pearce’s favorites to read and reread
  • How author biographies and their novels amplify each other
  • Why reading is so essential as a life skill
  • Tips on reading lists, priorities, and understanding genres
  • The difference between taking time and wasting time
  • How books can prompt or strengthen conversion to Christ

Hollywood stuntman and actor uncover why “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” is so damn brilliant

In this video, I pick the skilled brains of a Hollywood stuntman and an an award-winning actor to break down why Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood works so damn well, and on so many levels.

Former FBI Special Agent Tim Clemente is a stunt performer and writer (NCIS-Los Angeles, The Unit, Criminal Minds) who went undercover as a drug smuggler to help take down members of the Cali Cartel. A 2011 Esquire profile by described him as “an excellent terrorist hunter.” In other words, someone Brad Pitt would love to play in a movie.

Matthew Marsden is a British born actor and director (Rambo, The Transformers, Black Hawk Down, Shiner, That Man Is You) with a passion for communicating life through cinematic story.

Both men happen to be practicing Catholics and fathers of large families—which spells a unique a perspective on the social and cultural issues explored in Tarantino’s ninth film.

We cover a wide range of topics and themes in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, including:

 * Why Hippies as quasi-Nazis represents a massive shift in cultural narrative

* the many allusions to other Tarantino movies but also to LA icons and other movies abound in this movie

* True masculine virtue vs false substitute “masculinities”

* Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth as actual cowboy, driven not by ego or high salary but by what is right

* Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton stumbles into a new era of showbiz that cause his insecurities to flare up—but, with Cliff’s paradoxical mentorship, grows far beyond what he thought he had in him

* Why this movie robs the Manson legacy by providing a “What If” premise that highlights the innocent loveliness of real life murder victim Sharon Tate

* Key question: is this movie an indictment of Hollywood penchant for selling depictions of violence—and, indirectly, of the writer director himself?

#144: The Sexual Roots of Identity Politics—Mary Eberstadt

#144: The Sexual Roots of Identity Politics—Mary Eberstadt

How did the culture get so chaotic so quickly? Identity politics taints everything it touches; sexual minorities clamor for rights that didn’t exist five years ago; violence has replaced reason in public discourse.

How did we get here?

This is the gargantuan problem tackled by scholar and social critic Mary Eberstadt in her latest book, Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics. In light of the level of rage that has taken over public conversations, on and off line, how can we get traction with ideologues on the Left? Eberstadt says we must begin by listening and understanding.

Every once in a while, a set of vitally important ideas shows up in one place. This book is such a place.

In this episode you will learn

  • The nature and brief history of identity politics
  • Why identity politics have spread in tandem with the spread of the sexual revolution across the US and elsewhere
  • How the internet enabled globalism and vice versa
  • Why science will finally reveal the empirical  harm of pornography the way it did to nicotine
  • How birth control has radically altered the ecosystem
  • How the #MeToo movement reveals the breakdown of social learning
  • What couples and families can do starting now to turn the tide toward sexual and societal sanity
