#169: Priest “Joins” Abuse Victims—Father John Hollowell (Free Version)

#169: Priest “Joins” Abuse Victims—Father John Hollowell (Free Version)

In mid-February, 2020, Father John Hollowell was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Probably one of the least desirable things to hear. The small-town Indiana pastor (of two busy parishes) has not only taken it in stride, as far as that’s possible, he says it was an answer to a prayer he made in 2018 during the maddening summer of shame with the news of McCarrick and related sins and crimes emerged—again.

As he explains in this in-depth interview, he asked God, if it be His will, to share in some way with the suffering victims of priestly sexual abuse. Hollowell says he senses strongly that his brain tumor is a mysterious answer to that prayer. He is consciously offering up all his anxiety, pain, chemo marathon—all of it—in union with Christ on the cross in special solidarity with those violated and hurt by predator priests.

Here is a good apple making reparation for the bad apples, an amazing thing. Let’s add to our prayer list this courageous young man of God even as we pray for the healing—and justice—for the victims of evil men who used their status to exploit and destroy. The more you ponder what Father Hollowell is doing, the more extraordinary it becomes.

In this episode you will learn

  • The biblical basis for “offering it up”
  • How the scandal of predators in the priesthood affected him and what his reaction was to the McCarrick news
  • Why he decided to reach out to SNAP (Survivor Network of Abused by Priests, an ethically iffy group of secular lawsuit hounds) to connect with victims
  • His thoughts on suffering, meaning, and why God permits bad things to happen to good people
  • His prognosis hopes and what he hopes will be gained by his offer to offer up any suffering that comes

The Shocking, Totally Click-Baity, Truth About Lent!

The Shocking, Totally Click-Baity, Truth About Lent!

It’s time now for the annual Lent Wars!

If Christmas is the season to be jolly, Lent is the season to be needlessly scrupulous and neurotic, and to argue online about things that have VERY little to do with imitating Jesus, amiright?

In this video, I tell the truth about the main confusions many people seem to have about Lent.

Since Ye Olde Anglo Saxon days, Lent took over from the Latin term quadragesima, which means “the fortieth day.”

But…. if you sit down with your calendar and count the days of Lent they do not total 40 regardless of whether you include Sundays.

The number is more biblically symbolic than literal. However, 40 recurs frequently in the Bible. A sample:

* Rain fell for “forty days and forty nights” during the Flood (Genesis 7:4).
* Noah waited for 40 days after the tops of mountains were seen after the flood, before releasing a raven (Genesis 8:5-7).
* Spies were sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan (promised to the children of Israel) for “40 days” (Numbers 13:2, 25).
* The Hebrew people lived in the lands outside of the promised land for “40 years”(Numbers 32:13).
* The prophet Elijah had to walk 40 days and 40 nights before arriving at mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8)
* Before his temptation, Jesus fasted “40 days and 40 nights” in the Judean desert (Matthew 4:2, Mark 1:13, Luke 4:2).
* From the resurrection of Jesus to the ascension of Jesus there were 40 days……(Acts 1:3).

What is the purpose of Lent?

In the words of the Universal Norms for the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar, Lent is: “…a liturgical season that is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance.”

Other questions answered: When does Lent begin and when does it end? Are Sundays included? What’s with abstinence during Lent? Doesn’t the Church hate sex enough already without forbidding it during Lent?  What does the law of abstinence forbid? Did a medieval pope was trying to protect the Italian fishing industry allow fish on Fridays? Is alligator meat seafood?

All these and much more!

Again, the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. The season of Lent is an annual opportunity to reset our wills, to grow in self-control, and to let our hunger remind us of the Bread that comes down from heaven, without which we can do NOTHING.

A blessed Lent to you.

#168: Blind Faith In Music—José Feliciano (Free Version)

#168: Blind Faith In Music—José Feliciano (Free Version)

For a man who has won nine Grammy Awards, recorded over 60 albums, and performed with the very best of American artists, José Feliciano is as down to earth as they come. With his ready laugh, self-deprecating humor, and penchant for bad puns, the self-taught guitar prodigy wants to talk about his Catholic faith, from which he drifted a few years back.

Born blind from congenital glaucoma, his family moved to Spanish Harlem from his native Puerto Rico when young José was five. He found a natural draw to music, and scraped, and practiced, and wrote, and practiced some more—many hours per day—until it was clear the kid had some serious guitar chops.

Despite having toured all over the world, won the accolades all musicians dream of winning, he seems happiest on the homefront, at ease with himself and his God.

In this episode you will learn

  • How he discovered his amazing facility for guitar playing
  • His reaction at learning that his 1968 cover of California Dreamin’ by “The Mamas and the Papas” was selected by director Quentin Tarantino for his Grammy-nominated soundtrack for the hit 2019 movie Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.
  • The sweet reason he’s still “not totally resigned” to the fact of his blindness
  • How his unorthodox rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner at the 1968 World Series game badly damaged his career but led to his meeting his wife Sue.
  • His abandonment, and re-embrace of, the Catholic faith of his boyhood
  • How he improvised the recording of the Christmas classic “Feliz Navidad”
  • His views on pop acts and pop music in general today
  • Why drummers are so under-appreciated
  • Whether he still gets nervous before shows

Amazonian Synod Docs For Dummies

Amazonian Synod Docs For Dummies

A lot of commentators miss some obvious things Germanzonian Synod documents, and others are clap-happy for reasons that don’t quite compute. The docs:

The very first sentence of the Apostolic Exhortation Querida Amazonia, is, “the beloved Amazon region stands before the world in all its splendor, its drama and its mystery.”

Is it just me or does this sound like something from a National Geographic travel documentary?

Querida Amazonia and the Final Document contain numerous iffy scientific claims, enlists the Bible to support the Synod fathers’ agenda, and gives over to talk of integral ecology, the need to have “an afro-descendent” face, a migrant face, a youth faith, an alleged “right to the city,” and “cosmic” relations. For starters.

It’s all not only odd but troubling because Episcopalis Communio raises Synod Exhortations to a magisterial teaching level.

Word counts can be very revealing. Querida Amazonia from beginning to end has 16,438 words.

Of these, the name of Jesus only appears 16 times.

That’s one-tenth of 1%.

In the Final Document, there are more uses of the word salad phrase “integral ecology” than of the name of Jesus.

There seems to be two references to Pachamama in the Exhortation “Querida Amazonia,” in 79 and 101.

If there’s a bottom line here, it’s that the whole concept of synodality really means Protestantism.

Everything is ad hoc, everything is a journey, everything is a process, there are no certain answers.

The fact that “synodal” Apostolic Exhortations now come under the arm of the magisterium sets up a needless conflict between what a local Synod proposes, and what the magisterium has taught since Apostolic times.

On the ground, this means that future Synods — not of the Amazon area, but let’s say the San Diego area or the Chicago area, or the Newark area, is going to come up with different proposals then say a Synod of the Tyler Texas area or the Kazakhstan area.

We’ve already seen what happened with the German Synod.

The question becomes: is sappy poetry now part of official Catholic teaching? Because Querida Amazonia displays some Mount Everest level of sappy poetry.

In the meantime, the good news is: Jesus is Lord, the Eucharist is Jesus, and that even if it seems like he is sleeping in the boat, Jesus asleep with us is really all we need.

#167: China: the World’s Biggest Bully—Dr. Steven Mosher (Free Version)

#167: China: the World’s Biggest Bully—Dr. Steven Mosher (Free Version)

China is often in the news—for finance, international business, cuisine, and more recently, the Wuhan coronavirus. But the 800-pound panda bear is the fact that China invented totalitarianism centuries before Christ, a collective reality of self-understanding that was tailor-made for the Communist revolution when it arrived.

China expert Dr. Steven Mosher has both a historical and religious context. As a historian, he knows the pattern of oppression and bondage under Communism. As a Catholic convert, he knows how critical China is to the mission of the Church.

In this episode you will learn

  • When and why China invented totalitarianism
  • How Communist Party leader Xi “Big Daddy” Jinping believes in Sinocentric world domination
  • Why the one-child (revamped to two-child in 2015) only policy is already backfiring demographically on China
  • Is China lying about the coronavirus?
  • Why Mosher believes the Nixon rapprochement of 1972 was a major diplomatic blunder
  • Why China’s dream of world hegemony would spell a nightmare for America and the west
  • How the Cardinal Parolin/Uncle Ted McCarrick/Pope Francis deal with the Communist Chinese—fed by enormous naivete—is a disaster for the underground Catholics in union with Rome.

Theology Hunger Is Real

Theology Hunger Is Real

One of the great providential blessings of living as a Catholic under the confused and confusing papacy of Pope Francis is that there’s a new hunger out there to learn the truth about the Catholic faith.

Not the liberal agenda version, not the “Jesuit tradition” version, not the LA Religious Ed Congress version, not the Feeneyite or the extremist SSPX version, and not the clap-happy, self-help therapeutic moral deism version.

I mean Catholicism, I mean the deposit of faith, what Jude 1:3 calls “the faith once delivered to the saints.”

Could you summarize the teaching of Vatican I or the Council of Trent in a few sentences?

Do you know what was defined at the Council of Ephesus, or the First Council of Nicea?

It’s like the entire Catholic Church, at almost all levels, has a case of collective amnesia when it comes to grasping what went on between the resurrection and 1962.

Then you need to dig into the deposit of faith.

If I was going to create an online course on learning the faith, leave your comment below about what you would like to learn. What are your missing links? Questions that are unanswered in your mind? Controversies are not settled in your spirit?

Brothers and sisters if you want to follow Jesus Christ as a Catholic there’s a certain indispensable minimum knowledge you have to acquire.

Our job is to tune in and hear His Voice.

And let me know in the comments below what kinds of things you would like to learn about the claims of the Catholic Church, the history, and the reasons WHY the Church teaches what she does. Where do we find the sacraments in the Bible? Why do we pray to Saints? And why does incense smell so awesome?

#166: Confronting Church Confusion—Bishop Athanasius (Free Version)

#166: Confronting Church Confusion—Bishop Athanasius (Free Version)

He speaks German, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, English, French and Italian, and he reads Latin and Ancient Greek. His parents were exiled in Ural Mountains gulag under Stalin where they helped the underground Church. He is one of the Catholic Church’s most outspoken prelates, a supporter of the Viganò letters and critic of the Amoris Laetitia ambiguities, who speaks with refreshing frankness about Church corruption and the infiltration of evils in her ranks.

He is Bishop Athanasius Schneider, author (with interviewer Diane Montagna) of Christus Vincit: Christ’s Triumph Over the Darkness of the Age. And His Excellency is this week’s guest on The Patrick Coffin Show.

In this episode you will learn

  • Why his given name with the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross of Coimbra, Athanasius, is fitting and providential
  • The intellectual and spiritual roots of Modernism
  • The history of Communion in the hand and its corrosive effects on the Faith
  • How to survive scandals like the Pachamama idol worship at the Vatican
  • Why learning the deposit of faith has never been more important
  • Signs of hope and encouragement among the weeds and bad news

Mass Hysteria Scares? Ignore ‘Em!

Mass Hysteria Scares? Ignore ‘Em!

The lame scream media are hell-bent on keeping us in a constant state of fear.

In the 1960s. it was the overpopulation bomb sold by people like Paul Ehrlich.

Then it was UFO scares.

In 1978, Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek appeared in a documentary warning us about the coming Ice Age, which is accidentally hilarious because he’s so earnest and straight-faced. Don’t believe me? Click here.

Kind of like today’s celebrities regarding global warming, oops I mean climate change.

Then we had the AIDS scare. Then it was Legionnaires disease. Then it was Ebola behind every bush. Then it was swine flu. Then it was death from aspartame. (Remember that?) Then it was the belief that Procter & Gamble was run by Satanists and that the devil was in your toothpaste.

Then it was H1N1 bird flu

Then it was the SARS virus

Then it was the West Nile Virus

From time to time, it’s a giant meteorite

Then it was Killer Bees attacking from pretty much anywhere

And now it’s the Coronavirus.

The terror inducement never ends!

The words of Scripture were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit many centuries before the rise of mass media.

No need to join the hysteria. No need to pick up what the media lays down.

Now is a good time to remind ourselves of a couple of Bible verses:

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18

“In this world you will have trouble. Take heart I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Get to know Jesus. And punch fear in the face.
